Pacific falls 9-2 in series finale to No. 9 Long Beach State

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers fell to No. 9 Long Beach State, 9-2, on Sunday, Apr. 24. The loss dropped the Tigers to 18-24 on the season and 4-8 in Big West Conference play, while the 49ers moved to 30-14 overall and 10-2 in conference.

After the 49ers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Pacific answered back with a single run in the bottom half of the frame as senior Brandon Gottier (Bellingham, Wash.) drove in freshman Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) with a one-out bases loaded single. The Tigers, however, were unable to push any more runs across in the inning.

Long Beach State added four unearned runs in the second inning as the Tigers committed to errors, capped by a two-run home run off the bat of Troy Tulowitski,

The Dirtbags added two more runs in the third inning to take an 8-1 lead and chase Pacific starter, freshman Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.).

The game remained 8-1 until the eighth inning, when both teams scored single runs. Pacific's run came on an RBI groundout by Ching.

Long Beach State's Jared Hughes (6-2) won his fifth-straight, giving up two runs on seven hits over six-plus innings.

Manning (1-5) was chased from the game in the third inning giving up eight runs (four earned) on six hits over 2.1 innings.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 29 as they begin a three-game with UC Riverside in Riverside, Calif.
