Tigers Continue Storng Spring With A Semifinal Showing At Cal 7v7
May 2, 2008
Berkeley, Calif. - Playing away from home for the first time this spring, the Pacific soccer team had a strong showing at the Cal 7v7 tournament, going 3-2 on the day. The Tigers finished first in their bracket of the tournament before eventually falling to the tournament champions, the California Storm, in the semifinals. The Storm defeated Cal in the championship game to claim the tournament.
In bracket play, the Tigers started the day with a 2-0 win over Chico State, continuing their stellar defensive play with their fifth consecutive shutout this spring. Junior Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) got the Tigers scoring started in the game before sophomore Alysse Valenzuela (Stockton, Calif.) finished the Wildcats off with her first score of the day.
The second game of the day proved to be the Tigers' best offensive showing of the tournament as Pacific put on a shooting show with a 5-0 win over Air Force. In the contest sophomore Lydia Jackson (El Cajon, Calif.) and freshmen Kim Hargrave (La Palma, Calif.) and Sammi Teramae (Kapolei, Hawaii) got on the scoresheet for the first time in the afternoon while King added her second strike of the day.
Game three proved to be the Tigers most impressive win of the spring thus far as Pacific posted a 3-0 shutout of the tournament host, defeating Cal 3-0. Once again, Jackson and Teramae knocked home a goal for the Tigers while freshman Natalie Wong (Mililani, Hawaii) posted her first goal of the tournament.
With three wins on the day and their bracket in hand, the Tigers suffered their first defeat of the afternoon, falling to UC Davis, 3-2, in the final game of bracket play. The three goals marked the first time this spring the Tigers' defense had given up a goal to their opposition. Offensively, King and Hargrave posted goals for Pacific.
Despite their impressive showing in bracket play, the Tigers drew the former WPSL champion Storm in a semifinal matchup. With a full roster intact and Tiger assistant coach Brittany Gillespie in goal, the Storm proved to be too much for the Tigers.
With the 7v7 tournament completed, the Tigers will host their first annual Girls Day Out on Saturday, May 3.
