Pacific Defeats Minnesota, Falls to No. 18 Oregon State at Worth Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. - Following a pair of rainouts on Friday, the No. 24 Pacific softball team opened Worth Invitational play with a 12-0 victory over Minnesota and a 6-3 loss to No. 18 Oregon State on Saturday, Mar. 5, at Titan Softball Complex. With the split, the Tigers moved to 10-4 on the season. Minnesota fell to 9-8, while Oregon State improved to 12-6.
Pacific wasted no time denting the scoreboard against the Golden Gophers, plating a single run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a Brandi Gordon (Redmond, Wash.) RBI single.

The Tigers struck for five runs in the third to build a 6-0 cushion. Freshman Lauren Sandelin (Sedro-Woolley, Wash.) capped Pacific's scoring in the inning with a two-run double.
Pacific added six more runs in the sixth, all with two outs, highlighted by an Ashlie D'Errico (Lancaster, Calif.) two-run single and a Crystal Presson (Livermore, Calif.) two-run home run. The blast was Presson's third of the season.
In all, nine Tigers recorded a base hit in the contest, including four Tigers with two hits apiece. Presson was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and senior Michelle Anunciation (Chino Hills, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Freshman Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) was sharp in the circle for Pacific, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out two. She improved to 4-1.
Katie Dalen took the loss for Minnesota to fall to 2-2.
Against Oregon State, the Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double steal with runners at first and third. Sophomore Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) brought the Tigers even at 1-1 with a run-scoring double in the bottom half of the inning.
Adrienne Alo put Oregon State back in front in the top of the second with a run-scoring double of her own down the left field line. Mia Longfellow followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Sherina Galvan from third, to make it 3-1.
D'Errico brought the Tigers even once again in the bottom of the third, knotting the game at 3-3 on a two-run home run over the left field fence. The blast was her first of the season.
Oregon State re-took the lead for good in the top of the fifth, as senior Natalie King (Huntington Beach, Calif.) issued a bases loaded walk to make the score 4-3. The Beavers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, making it 6-3. King took the loss in the circle for Pacific to fall to 6-2.
Ta'Tyana McElroy earned the victory for Oregon State to even her mark at 2-2, while Brianne McGowan pitched the final three innings for the Beavers to pick up her second save.
